Kawabe Kakyo left Osaka where he first studied with his father, Kawabe Ka’in. In Kyoto he developed an interesting openness towards various painting traditions: His teachers were Tosa Mitsukyo (1805-1868), Kano Eigaku (1790-1867), the Nanga painter Nakabayashi Chikuto (1776-1853), and the Shijo painter Oda Kaisen (1758-1862). – The painting is signed Kakyo and sealed Kumi – Certificate of authenticity by Tokuda Koen. – From a private collection, Kyoto

Poem calligraphy by Otagaki Rengetsu:

Longing a little for both
the dew and the pine,
I gaze at the field where
the autumn flowers
remain as they are.
