Born in Fukuoka, at a very young age Koseki was sent to Kyoto where he studied initially in the Shijo manner under Matsumura Keibun, before moving to Osaka to study Nanga painting under Shinozaki Shochiku. He would once again return to Kyoto to continue his Nanga study under Oda Kaisen (1785-1862), before finally settling in Osaka, where he would remain for the rest of his life. Kono Bairei (1844-1895) was one of his most prominent students.
