Originally trained in Western-style oil painting, Kondo Koichiro worked as a successful cartoonist-illustrator, expolored nihonga techniques, and eventually achieved fame as an innovative ink painter. Today he is best known for pushing the medium of ink further than anyone else in order to portray air an light effects in his objective let lyrical paintings (Michiyo Morioka in Literti Modern, p. 275).
