Miyagawa Chozo [Makuzu Chozo] (1797-1860)
宮川長造 (真葛長造)

Miyagawa Chozo (also known as Chawan'ya Chobei IX or Raku no Chozo) was the ninth-generation descendant of Chokansai and the father of Miyagawa (Makuzu) Kozan I (1842-1916).
In 1832 at the age of thirty-five, he became apprentice to Aoki Mokubei (1767-1833) and by 1835 Chozo had established his reputation as an independent potter (cf. his own entry in the crafts section of the annual edition of the Kyoto dictionary of local biography).
Surprising for a pupil of Mokubei, a master of sencha tea utensils, Chozo produced almost exclusively chanoyu (tea ceremony-) wares. Perhaps Chozo's most representative works were his Ninsei utsushi (items inspired by Nonomura Ninsei). His incense containers were particularly renowned.
