Asian Art Newspaper, March 2012, p.38-39 by Martin Lorber:
"These two scholarly Swiss dealers are highly regarded for their taste and knowledge in the fields of Zenga and Cha and both are broadly covered by this exhibition. It is with their Zenga and calligraphic scrolls that really take off in this exhibition.
There is a letter by Kumazawa Banzan (1619-1691), a Kyoto samurai in the service of Ikeda Mitsumasa, daimyo of Okayama Bizen.
This is accompanied by paintings by Suda Kokuta, Kobayashi Issa, Yamada Sohen, Fukuda Kodajin, calligraphy by Mitsunokoji Saneatsu, Gion Nankai and Setsudo Nyoun, and a pair of landscapes by Uragami Gyokudo.
Alongside these is calligraphy by Tokugawa Mitsutomo, grandson of Tokugawa Ieyasu, second daimyo of Owari, master swordsman and student of both Shokaso Shojo and Kano Tanyu.
But of all the calligraphies, the best, personally speaking, is a letter, probably 1771, by Yosa Buson (1716-1783) to Ike no Taiga (1723-1776). For years, it was that Buson, presumably competitive and prideful, never corresponded personally with other artists, but this elegantly brushed letter is proof to the contrary.
Ceramics for the Tea Ceremony are always integral to BachmannEckenstein exhibitions and this one includes a 17th-century Bizen hanaire, incense containers by Makuzu Kozan I and II and Raku X Tannyu and chawan by Kawakita Handeishi, Raku IX Ryonyu and Raku XII Seinyu." (Click to download)
